The 2026 award recognises an institution that carries forward the remarkable legacy of the late Dr MS Swaminathan, a Bharat Ratna recipient, whose scientific leadership played a historic role in India’s Green Revolution and the country’s journey from food scarcity to food self-reliance.

This transformation took place under the leadership of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, whose political resolve and strong support for agricultural science, together with Dr Swaminathan’s scientific vision and the efforts of India’s farmers, helped lay the foundations of the nation’s food security.

Through its work in sustainable agriculture, food and nutrition security, biodiversity, and rural livelihoods, MSSRF carries this legacy forward by bringing the benefits of science to farmers and rural communities.
