Billed as the largest coal-fired power station in the public sector in the country, the 800-MW first unit of the 4,000-MW Yadadri Super Thermal Power Station is coming up at Damaracherla in Nalgonda district of Telangana, as scheduled.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao went around the project under construction on Monday, 28 November, as the officials of the GENCO and the BHEL, which is building the power station, apprised him of its salient features.

The chief minister was accompanied by Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy, Minister G Jagadeeswar Reddy, Errabilli Dayakar Rao, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, and GENCO Chairman and Managing Director D Prabhakar Rao.

The ₹29,965-crore power station is coming up close to the railway station, making it easy to transport coal from the Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) Ltd and the imported coal from the Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports.

The GENCO expects the first unit of the 800-MW power thermal power station to be ready by September next year.

The station comprises five units, each with a capacity of 800 MW. The second unit is likely to be commissioned by December next year.

According to official sources, 91 percent of the work relating to the first two units has been completed, while more than 70 percent of the work of the remaining three units is over.

The remaining three units are expected to be complete by 2024.

The power station would augment the supply of power in Telangana, which is committed to providing 24×7 power supply to all sectors, including agriculture, which is the thrust area for the government.

The Yadadri Super Thermal Power Station is the third coal-fired power station to come up after the formation of Telangana state.

The other ones are the 800-MW station at Kothagudem in 2019 and the 1,080-MW Bhadradri Power Plant near Bayyaram in the Bhadradri-Kothagudem district.

The Yadadri station is expected to connect to the grid through three different routes: Wada-Dichpally, Warangal-Vadrora, and Angul-Palasa.
