The Andhra Pradesh government has reinstated IPS officers Kanthi Rana Tata and Vishal Gunni, who were suspended in connection with the Kadambari Jethwani case.
The General Administration Department issued GO Nos. 1751 and 1752 to this effect.
Vishal Gunni had been under suspension since September 15, 2024, and the suspension was extended periodically. Gunni challenged the suspension orders before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). He subsequently approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court, alleging that the CAT orders were not being implemented.
Against this backdrop, Gunni and fellow IPS officer Kanthi Rana submitted representations on August 24, seeking revocation of their suspension. Based on their requests, DGP Harish Gupta recommended to the state government that their suspension be revoked. Acting on the DGP’s recommendation, Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad issued orders on Thursday lifting their suspension and directing their immediate reinstatement into service.
The government had suspended Gunni and Tata in 2024 under the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules and subsequently extended their suspension from time to time.
On February 2, 2024, YSRCP leader Kukkala Vidyasagar lodged a police complaint against film actress Kadambari Jethwani.
Based on the complaint, Ibrahimpatnam police registered FIR No. 90. Vijayawada police subsequently arrested Jethwani in Mumbai on February 3, 2024.
After the NDA alliance led by Chandrababu Naidu came to power in Andhra Pradesh in 2024, Jethwani complained to the state government that she had been illegally detained by Andhra Pradesh police. Following her complaint, cases were registered against several police officials.
Based on Jethwani’s complaint, Ibrahimpatnam police registered FIR No 469 in October 2024.
A DGP-rank officer and former Intelligence chief, PSR Anjaneyulu, who was facing allegations in the case, retired from service last month.
Several inspectors and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) are also facing allegations in the case. The CID investigation into the allegations against these police officials is continuing.
In July 2026, a chargesheet was finally filed based on Vidyasagar’s complaint against Jethwani. In what marked a U-turn by the Andhra Pradesh police, the chargesheet confirmed the allegations of blackmail and extortion against the actress.
Proceedings are continuing in court on Vidyasagar’s objections to the removal of the names of Jethwani’s family members from the case.
Action was initiated against police officials based on the complaint filed by Jethwani in October 2024. A chargesheet in this case is yet to be filed.
The government said it examined the DGP’s reports and the representations submitted by Gunni and Tata on August 24 before deciding to revoke their suspension.
It made clear, however, that the revocation would not affect the disciplinary proceedings or criminal cases pending against them.
The government directed the DGP to serve copies of the orders on both officers and obtain acknowledgements from them.
