The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh is all set to resurrect Janma Bhoomi, a programme introduced in 1996 for bringing about development in villages with the involvement of people.
It would be brought forth in a new avatar— Janma Bhoomi-II—to suit the needs of Andhra Pradesh, which badly needed impetus for development.
The TDP politburo which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the party office in Mangalagiri in Guntur district on Thursday, 8 August, decided to use the second edition of Janma Bhoomi to propel the state government’s public, private, people’s participation (PPPP) initiative to eradicate poverty in the state.
According to TDP legislator and politburo member Kaluva Srinvasulu, the politburo, at its maiden meeting after the NDA assumed power in the state, decided to revive the Janma Bhoomi programme to involve people in the development of villages.
“The government intended to involve those who had settled abroad to help the efforts of the government in developing villages which they had left long ago,” Srinivasulu said.
Chandrababu Naidu, to spur development in villages, ushered in the concept of Janma Bhoomi after he became the chief minister for the first time in 1996 and implemented it by involving people. The Janma Bhoomi programme used to be held across the state as if it were a festival. It drew appreciation from people and also evoked interest in other states, though minor hiccups took place here and there.
The politburo also discussed at length the linking of Krishna, Godavari and Penna basins to provide irrigation facility to the parched lands of the Rayalaseema region.
They discussed the diversion of Godavari waters to Potireddypadu Head Regulator, upstream of Sraisailam barrage, to supplement Krishna waters for use in the Rayalaseeema region, Srinivasulu said but did not elaborate on how it would be done. Similarly, to deal with the drought problem in north Andhra, it had been decided to link the Vamsadhara and Nagavali Rivers, Srinivasulu said.
The politburo also discussed the growing but unobtrusive impatience of the party workers for appointment to nominated posts. According to Agriculture Minister K Atchen Naidu, all the initiatives would be finalised as government policies after they are vetted thoroughly at the party level.
The politburo also discussed appointing party leaders who worked hard and those who missed opportunities in the recent elections to nominated posts. The party will do a thorough background check before appointing one to the nominated post. The politburo also took note of the hardship workers had faced when police cases were registered against them during the previous government. It has also been decided to increase accident insurance coverage from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh to all those who enrol themselves as TDP members by paying ₹100 as a fee.
