Synopsis: YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy blamed the Chandrababu Naidu government for the attack on a Class 10 student at a government school in Raptadu, Anantapur district, and demanded Rs 50 lakh in compensation and free medical treatment for her. He accused the government of allowing illegal liquor outlets and ganja to spread across villages, putting schoolchildren at risk.

YSRCP president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday, 2 November, held the Chandrababu Naidu government responsible for the attack on a Class 10 student at a Zilla Parishad school in Raptadu, Anantapur district, and demanded that it pay her Rs 50 lakh in compensation and bear the cost of her medical treatment.

The accused, Hemanth, who was injured in police firing after the attack, faces the possible amputation of half of his right leg after the injury developed gangrene due to a lack of blood circulation.

Jagan visited the girl, who is undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, accompanied by YSRCP leaders.

He said attacks on female students in government schools had never occurred in Andhra Pradesh before and accused the Chandrababu Naidu government of creating conditions in which even schoolchildren had no safety.

Jagan accuses government of exposing schoolchildren to drugs

Sarcastically remarking that students should thank Chandrababu for bringing about the situation, Jagan attributed the attacks to the proliferation of illegal liquor outlets, popularly known as belt shops, and the easy availability of ganja.

He alleged that drugs were being made easily accessible to children, turning them into addicts, and said the government should bow its head in shame over the incidents.

He said an unidentified person had entered the ZP school and attacked the girl because of the government’s negligence. The government must take responsibility for her treatment and pay her at least Rs 50 lakh in compensation, he demanded. If the government failed to respond, the YSRCP would stand by the family.

Jagan also promised that if the government did not pay the compensation, his party would extend every possible assistance to the family within a month of returning to power.

Accusing the government of allowing the rampant implementation of what he called the “Red Book Constitution”, he said nine such incidents had occurred in the Raptadu constituency alone in the past 15 months. Belt shops and ganja were operating unchecked in every village, he alleged.

On the girl’s health, Jagan said her condition was improving. She had undergone an 11-hour surgery, and doctors had informed him that she was recovering rapidly.

Accused’s right leg develops gangrene

Hemanth, who was injured in the police firing following the attack, is undergoing treatment at the Anantapur Government Hospital.

Hospital Superintendent Malleswari said he had suffered severe injuries to his right leg and that the absence of blood circulation had caused gangrene to develop.

Doctors may have to amputate half of the leg, she said. Surgical specialists will take a final decision after examining the results of medical tests. Doctors are monitoring his condition.

The police shifted Hemanth to the government hospital in an unconscious state on Sunday night.

A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the High Court seeking a comprehensive inquiry into the police firing on Hemanth.

The petitioner asked the court to order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the firing.

The High Court issued notices to the respondents and adjourned the hearing until Tuesday.
