Infant among three killed as RTC bus overshoots platform at Vijayawada terminal

Several others were injured when the bus overshot the platform and ploughed into passengers.

At least three people, including a 10-month-old boy, were killed instantly, and several others were injured when an RTC bus ran over the platform at the Pundit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday, 6 November.

The child’s mother and a private outsourcing bus conductor were also killed when the bus belonging to the Autonagar depot ploughed into passengers on platform number 12.

The Pundit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada is a major transit point in Andhra Pradesh.

Krishna Lanka Police Circle Inspector MV Durga Rao said they were recording the statements of the witnesses. “It has to be ascertained whether a technical issue or the driver’s fault had caused the accident,” he told South First.

The police have registered a case under Section 304 (A) (causing death by negligence), and detained the driver.

The APSRTC announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The Corporation’s Managing Director Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao told reporters that an enquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Condoling the deaths, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of those who were killed in the accident. He directed officials to ensure adequate treatment for the injured.
