Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and Assembly elections in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the BJP is lining up leadership visits one after the other to the two Telugu-speaking states.

As part of that push, Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Anurag Thakur visited Andhra Pradesh at the same time BJP No 2 and Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on a trip to Telangana on Sunday, 21 August.

The visit essentially laid the groundwork for the saffron party to sound the poll bugle for the upcoming elections in the states.

Anurag Thakur in Vijayawada

Thakur held a closed-door meeting with the members of Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) — the youth wing of the BJP — in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada on Sunday morning.

He then visited the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam.

“People of Andhra Pradesh want good governance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance will come here,” Thakur said.

Talking to reporters after offering his prayers at the temple, Thakur took aim at the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party government in Andhra Pradesh.

He said the BJP was set to bring a change in the state and launch its campaign against the current government from Vijayawada itself.

Thakur added that the people in Andhra Pradesh were looking forward to a change.

Andhra Pradesh is slated to witness Assembly elections in 2024, which is also the year the Lok Sabha elections will be held.

The Assembly elections in Telangana are poised to be held in end-2023.

Amit Shah-Jr NTR meeting

Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah is all set to meet Jr NTR in Telangana on late Sunday evening.

According to political experts and analysts, Shah may offer Jr NTR to join the BJP. However, they feel that NTR might not join the saffron brigade but could lend his support.

Experts also believe that even if Jr NTR does not join the BJP, senior party leaders are planning to use his campaign skills to boost their prospects in both the Telugu-speaking states.

The BJP targeting for better poll results in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana was crystal clear from its two-day conclave organised in Hyderabad on 2-3 July.

The party’s top guns, including Modi, Shah, and president JP Nadda, were present at the event.
