Synopsis: Tensions persist in the local body elections in Andhra Pradesh. After severe unrest in 7 districts during the municipal election nominations, tensions persist during the MPTC and ZPTC election nominations as well. In Kadapa district, police took YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy into custody and later released him. House arrests of YSRCP leaders are continuing across the state.
Amid the nominations for ZPTC and MPTC elections in Andhra Pradesh, being accepted for the second day, the YSRCP alleged that police are placing its leaders under house arrest across the state.
Police have reportedly placed Kethireddy Pedda Reddy in Anantapur, Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, Mohith Reddy, and YSRCP MP Gurumurthy in Tirupati under house arrest.
Police also placed former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy in Nellore, Kethireddy Venkatarami Reddy in Dharmavaram, former minister Sake Sailajanath in Anantapur, Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy in Macherla, and Dadisetti Raja in Tuni under house arrest.
Party leaders also alleged that the police are preventing YSRCP candidates from filing their nominations, while key leaders were being confined to their homes based on information that they would go to support the ZPTC and MPTC candidates.

In Kadapa district, the police laid siege to the YSR Congress Party district office in Kadapa city. With hundreds of police personnel deployed, key leaders were taken into custody and shifted to various police stations.
Police took into custody Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy, district president P. Ravindranath Reddy, former Deputy CM S.B. Amzath Basha, K. Suresh Babu, MLC Ramachandra Reddy, former Mayor Paka Suresh, along with several other leaders. MP Avinash Reddy was later released.
Party workers tried to stop the police when they were taking MP YS Avinash Reddy and Ravindranath Reddy into custody. The party leaders further alleged that the police are obstructing them because they were holding discussions to get candidates—who could not file nominations during the municipal elections—to file their nominations now.
Police arrest YSRCP MP YS Avinash Reddy in Pulivendula.
Yesterday, TDP goons and the police obstructed YSRCP MPTC and ZPTC candidates from filing their nominations. Determined to ensure that the candidates get their rightful opportunity, the MP himself stepped forward to accompany them and facilitate the filing of nominations today.
But instead of taking action against the TDP goons who created a ruckus at the nomination centre yesterday, the police have arrested the MP and are taking him to the police station.
The YSRCP alleged that TDP leaders and the police are not even heeding the orders of the Supreme Court, and accused the police of cooperating with TDP leaders and arresting YSRCP leaders.
Former minister Dharmana alleged that TDP leaders and police are resorting to threats to stop candidates from filing nominations, and that there is no visible change in the police’s attitude despite the Supreme Court’s directives to the DGP. Dharmana alleged that the situation in the state is not conducive to holding elections smoothly.
He criticized that conditions unseen anywhere else in the country exist in Andhra Pradesh, and that Chandrababu intends to conduct elections by manipulating the systems.
Alleging that democracy is being disrupted, he demanded Chandrababu apologize to the people, and stated that the state government seems incapable of even conducting and facing elections fairly.
The former minister also criticized that the TDP are resorting to violent acts out of fear of losing if the elections are held fairly. He reminded that clear instructions were given to the State Election Commission and the DGP regarding the conduct of elections, and stated that such violent incidents had never occurred in the state in the past 80 years.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s orders on the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections and the Election Commission’s decisions on conducting the polls, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan met with Chief Minister Chandrababu.
Discussions between the two on recent political developments lasted for over an hour. The two leaders held a one-on-one meeting regarding the violent incidents occurring during the conduct of elections and the latest developments.
It is learned that the two leaders discussed the future course of action in light of the Supreme Court’s suggestions on the scrutiny of nominations and resolution of objections.
