In Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains have severely impacted Nellore and Tirupati, leading to significant disruptions and flooding.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for additional districts, warning residents to remain vigilant as adverse weather conditions are expected to continue, heightening concerns about safety and infrastructure damage.

Depression over southwest Bay of Bengal 

As of 0530 hrs IST of 16 October, 2024, a depression was noted over southwest Bay of Bengal

The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, 16 October, 2024 over the same region  near latitude 12.1° N and longitude 83.4° E, about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 390 km east of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu – South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17 October.

IMD Met Centre Amaravati has placed 6 districts under OrangeAlert on 16 October including: Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, SPSR Nellore, Annamayya, Tirupati, and Chittoor districts

The same districts will be on red alert on 17 October alongside Anantapuramu, Sri Sathya Sai, and Bapatla districts on orange alert.

On cyclone watch 

The Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) at the state secretariat in Andhra Pradesh is keeping a watch on cyclone and its impact with the help of 4,845 cameras in the affected districts. RTGS Chief Executive Officer K Dinesh Kumar is keeping a watch on the rising levels of water in reservoirs, the inflows into the rivers, and rainfall in real time.

Four crest gates of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project were lifted by five ft to allow flood waters downstream, The outflow at the spill way was 32,400 cusecs.

Flight diverted from Tirupati 

Hyderabad- Tirupati Indigo flight diverted to  Chennai after the runway at Reniguta Airport (Tirupati) was affected by heavy rain.

Water stagnation on the runway caused a couple of flights arriving from Hyderabad to be diverted to Chennai. The road leading to the Tirupati airport was also flooded due to the ongoing heavy rain.
