Synopsis: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation stone for the ArcelorMittal–Nippon Steel India integrated steel plant in Anakapalli district. The project involves an investment of ₹1.36 lakh crore, making it one of the largest industrial investments in India in recent years.

In a major thrust to Andhra Pradesh’s industrial growth, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday, 23 March, laid the foundation stone for the Arcelor Mittal–Nippon Steel India (AM-NS India) integrated steel plant in Anakapalli district.

The project, touted as the largest-ever investment in the state’s steel sector, is expected to significantly reshape the industrial landscape of the Visakhapatnam region.

The foundation-laying ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent leaders, including Union Ministers HD Kumaraswamy and Srinivasa Varma, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and State Ministers Nara Lokesh, TG Bharath, K Atchannaidu, and V Anitha.

The project

The AM-NS India project involves an investment of ₹1.36 lakh crore, making it one of the largest industrial investments in India in recent years. The proposed plant will be developed as a greenfield integrated steel facility in two phases, with a total production capacity of 17.8 million metric tonnes per annum.

The government claimed that the project will generate direct and indirect employment for nearly one lakh people. In addition, a captive port will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹11,198 crore, which alone is expected to create around 6,000 jobs.

The state government views the project as a cornerstone in its efforts to transform the Visakhapatnam Economic Region into a major industrial hub. With the entry of a global steel giant like ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel, the region is expected to attract ancillary industries and boost downstream manufacturing activity.

To support the project, the government has also initiated infrastructure upgrades. A four-lane road connectivity project linking the steel plant to National Highway-16 is being taken up on a fast-track basis to ensure seamless logistics and transportation.
