Synopsis: The Andhra Pradesh CID arrested senior IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu in connection with the alleged “illegal arrest” and “harassment” of Mumbai starlet and model Kadambari Jethwani, when the YSRCP was in power.
The Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department (CID) officials have arrested senior IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu in Hyderabad, who is currently under suspension. He was arrested in connection with the alleged “illegal arrest” and “harassment” of Mumbai starlet and model Kadambari Jethwani when the YSRCP was in power.
After arresting him, the CID officials took him to Vijayawada for questioning.
Anjaneyulu, who held the rank of Director General of Police (DGP), served as the Andhra Pradesh Intelligence chief when Jethwani was allegedly “harassed” and “humiliated” during her incarceration.
Acting on the complaint lodged by Jethwani in August 2024, Anjaneyulu and two other IPS officers — former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kanthi Rana Tata and former Deputy Commissioner Vishal Gunni — were suspended on 15 September 2024 by the TDP-led NDA government that came to power in the state in June the same year.
The police had stated that Anjaneyulu was involved in orchestrating Jethwani’s “illegal” arrest in February 2024, when the YSRCP was in power.
Anjaneyulu is accused of “issuing oral instructions” on 30 January 2024 to two IPS officers — Kanthi Rana Tata and Vishal Gunni — to arrest Jethwani and her parents in Mumbai.
Investigating Jethwani’s complaint, the police revealed that this was done before a formal FIR was registered on 2 February 2024 at Ibrahimpatnam Police Station, indicating premeditated action without proper legal procedure.
The police investigation also claimed that the officers, now accused of harassing Jethwani, had “colluded” with YSRCP leader Kukkala Vidyasagar, who is the prime accused (A1) in the case registered after the TDP came to power.
Vidyasagar had filed a complaint against Jethwani on 2 February 2024, when the YSRCP was in power, accusing her of blackmail, extortion and forgery in a land deal. Acting on this complaint, the three IPS officers arrested her along with her parents.
Police documents stated that Anjaneyulu and the officers acted on the complaint without verifying its authenticity.
Flight tickets to Mumbai, where Jethwani resides, were booked on 1 February 2024 — a day before the FIR was registered— indicating that the arrest was preplanned.
Jethwani and her parents were arrested in Mumbai on 3 February 2024 and remained in judicial custody for 40 days in the Vijayawada sub-jail, during which they were allegedly subjected to humiliation.
The action was taken against the officials after the actor lodged a complaint in which she has sought registering cases against the three IPS officers besides Vidyasagar.
The actress, in her complaint, alleged that she and her family members were arrested based on documents in which her signature was forged. She said the police acted with unusual haste in arresting her, which reeked of a conspiracy. She alleged that the police had acted high-handedly with her while she was in police custody and that she was interrogated even at nights.
She said that though she and her parents had not committed any crime, they spent 42 days in Vijayawada prison.
Vidyasagar Rao, who allegedly had a relationship with the actor in the past, lodged a complaint with Ibrahimpatnam police near Vijayawada in early 2024, alleging that he was a victim of her blackmail and extortion. He alleged that the actor had forced him to transfer five acres of his agricultural land in Jaggayyapet in the Krishna district to her name.
In support of his complaint, he produced a document dated 2018 in which the actor’s address was given at an apartment in Juhu in Mumbai. However, according to her, she purchased the said apartment much later, in 2020. The stamp paper bore the year of its sale as 2023, which, according to her, proves that it is a fake document.
