Synopsis: Once the new terminal becomes operational, Vijayawada could potentially adopt a hub-and-spoke connectivity model, providing greater convenience to international travellers. Under the proposed arrangement, security checks and baggage check-in procedures could be completed at Vijayawada Airport itself, making onward international travel easier.

Fly91 is set to launch morning flight services from Vijayawada to Tirupati soon, offering a convenient option for devotees travelling to Tirumala from Vijayawada and surrounding areas, according to Airport Director Lakshmikantha Reddy.

The airport currently handles 22 flight services a day to various destinations across the country, with around 2,000 passengers using Vijayawada International Airport daily.

The airport can park 26 aircraft at a time. In addition to connectivity to major destinations across India, Vijayawada also has international flight connectivity to Singapore and Sharjah three times a week.

New terminal likely by October

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) awarded the contract for the remaining works of Vijayawada Airport’s new terminal to a new contractor in June. The terminal is expected to be completed by October.

The new terminal is being developed with multi-level operations, six aerobridges, escalators and advanced technology to handle airport operations efficiently. The facility is designed to expand in the future to meet rising passenger traffic and long-term needs.

Lakshmikantha Reddy said direct connectivity to Dubai would be particularly useful for passengers travelling from the region to Europe, the United States and other international destinations.

Once the new terminal becomes operational, Vijayawada could potentially adopt a hub-and-spoke connectivity model, providing greater convenience to international travellers. Under the proposed arrangement, security checks and baggage check-in procedures could be completed at Vijayawada Airport itself, making onward international travel easier.

Integrated cargo terminal

The airport authorities are also considering a long-term plan to establish a dedicated integrated cargo terminal to strengthen cargo-handling facilities.

Until the proposed dedicated cargo terminal is constructed, authorities are also examining the possibility of converting the existing terminal into a cargo facility.

Representatives of the AP Chamber of Commerce have called for improved facilities and connectivity from Vijayawada Airport, including direct flights to Dubai and hub-and-spoke connectivity to major international destinations.

They also sought flights to Vijayawada and other cities in Andhra Pradesh at convenient timings. The Chamber urged authorities to establish dedicated cold-storage cargo facilities to facilitate the air transportation of perishable agricultural and other products from the State.

The proposed improvements are expected to strengthen Vijayawada’s role as an important aviation and logistics hub for Andhra Pradesh.
