A former Andhra Pradesh minister and several of his relatives are facing legal action after his daughter-in-law lodged a domestic violence complaint against them.
In her statement to police, the daughter-in-law of the senior YSRCP leader alleged that she has been facing mental and physical harassment from her husband’s family since the wedding.
According to her, the harassment centred on demands for additional dowry payments. She claimed that other members of the household were aware of, and actively supported the alleged mistreatment.
She alleged that the harassment continued and even intensified despite multiple attempts at mediation in the presence of elders. She said she had to approach the police fearing for her life.
Acting on her complaint, police at the Ibrahimpatnam station in NTR district registered a case naming 11 members of the family. The leader’s brother Jogi Ramu and his sons are among the other accused in the case.
The case has been registered under sections 85, 318, 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, related to domestic cruelty, dowry harassment and cheating.
Investigators have begun looking into the allegations and have already recorded an initial statement from the daughter-in-law.
Police are expected to issue formal notices to the accused family members, summoning them for questioning as the probe continues.
