Synopsis: Gade Sai Krishna’s custodial death came to light after his mother filed a habeas corpus petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 2. Now, she has sought a court-monitored judicial probe. Bezawada Bar Association members are, meanwhile, questioning NTR Police Commissioner SV Rajashekar Babu’s role in the case.

Gade Vijaya Lakshmi, mother of Sai Krishna (25), alleged to have died in police custody within the NTR Police Commissionerate limits, has filed a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking a judicial probe into the illegal detention, custodial torture, and murder of her son.

She also appealed that the Court monitor the police investigation into the case.

The Commissioners Task Force (CTF) and Krishna Lanka police had arrested Sai Krishna, against whom a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) was pending, and brought him to the Krishna Lanka police station on May 6 at 7 am. Sai Krishna had been tracked using his mobile phone, which the cops seized and brought to the station.

When the victim’s mother went to the police station, she saw the police torturing him and Sai Krishna crying out in pain. Vijaya Lakshmi urged Circle Inspector SSVV Nagaraju to send her son home, but the police officer abused her and ordered her to leave the police station, the petition said.

Later, Sai Krishna went missing and the CI reportedly buried the body violating the norms at the Swargapuri burial ground in Vijayawada.

The incident came to light when Vijaya Lakshmi filed a habeas corpus petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 2.

Custody petition filed

The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the state government, that arrested the accused CI Nagaraju on June 24, filed a custody petition in the Second Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, which posted the matter to June 30.

Investigation officers identified that two head constables, J Nani and Ashok, and another person Suresh, a friend of the arrested CI, had assisted in shifting Sai Krishna’s body from the police station and cremating it in the burial ground.

Police reportedly took Suresh into custody on Friday night, and are questioning him in the custodial death and screening of evidence case.

Police Commissioner blamed

Members of the Bezawada Bar Association (BBA), meanwhile, alleged that Sai Krishna’s custodial torture, murder and the disappearance of his body must have happened with the knowledge of NTR Police Commissioner SV Rajashekar Babu.

At a press conference, the BBA members said the CTF and Krishna Lanka police arrested Sai Krishna and brought him to the police station. They asked how the Police Commissioner was unaware of the custodial death. They pointed out that the next offence (screening of evidence) occurred at the Krishna Lanka police station limits, leading them to question Rajashekar Babu’s silence on Sai Krishna’s death.

SIT officials, who questioned staff at the Krishna Lanka police station and the CTF, are looking for others involved in the crime.
