TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, who has been out on bail — granted on medical grounds — for 28 days since 31 October, underwent a cataract operation on his right eye at the LV Prasad Eye Hospital in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 7 November.
Three months ago, he had his left eye operated on. After being arrested on 9 September in the skill development scam case, he had applied for bail to get his right eye treated.
It should be noted that Naidu pulled the TDP out of the Telangana Assembly polls due to limited time and his legal issues.
This is the first time in 40 years that the Telugu Desam party is not contesting an election on Telugu soil.
Naidu arrived in Hyderabad on 1 November, and underwent medical tests twice at the AIG Hospital in Gachibowli for his heart and skin problems for the last few days. He was provided with skin treatment and medications.
Due to harsh weather conditions in Rajamahendravaram, where he was behind bars, Naidu is said to have suffered skin allergies, exacerbating his pre-existing skin problems.
“Today, he underwent cataract treatment, and reportedly, the operation was successful,” a close aide of Naidu told South First on Tuesday.
“It lasted for nearly two hours. Naidu has now returned to his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, and will be taking bed rest for some days,” added the aide.
According to the bail conditions, Naidu has to surrender at Rajamahendravaram Central Jail on or before 5 pm on 28 November.
Additionally, he is also expected to submit the records of the treatments he underwent in a sealed cover to the jail superintendent.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court single-judge bench, led by Justice T Mallikarjuna Rao, stated in its bail order, “With a humanitarian perspective in mind and considering the petitioner’s health condition, this court is inclined to grant temporary bail on health grounds to the petitioner/A.37, enabling him to undergo the required surgery on his right eye. In the facts and circumstances of the case, both petitions are allowed; the petitioner/A.37 is entitled to interim bail on medical grounds for four (4) weeks.
In its 3 November order on bail conditions, the court said Naidu shouldn’t participate in political meetings and rallies, and also shouldn’t talk about the case to the media.
It further stated, “The intention is to maintain legal order while causing the least possible interference with the respondent’s convenience and fundamental rights. The proposed condition can be considered as a balanced approach that does not conflict with the competing rights of the prosecution agency or the respondent.”
