Four workers have died in a massive explosion that occurred at the TIL Healthcare pharmaceutical company located in Sri City, Tirupati district.
The workers died after an industrial boiler at the company exploded. Several people were critically injured in the incident, which occurred early Saturday morning.
The District Collector and senior officials inspected the accident site.
The District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO), Dr Balakrishna Naik, stated that three individuals, Gaurav (35) from West Bengal, Chinna Mastanaiah (48) from Cheruvu, and Ramesh (52) from the Madarapakkam area, died at the scene of the accident. He said Gaurav’s body was shifted to Sullurpeta Government Hospital for a post-mortem, while the bodies of Chinna Mastanaiah and Ramesh were moved to Satyavedu Government Hospital.
Dr Balakrishna Naik also said that Mohan (28), a native of Naidukuppam in Tamil Nadu, who worked as a boiler operator at the company, sustained severe injuries in the accident and passed away while undergoing treatment. He stated that Mohan’s body was shifted to Sullurpeta Government Hospital for a post-mortem, bringing the total death toll from the accident to four.
The accident took place during a shift change in the early hours of Saturday. Because Friday was Gandhi Jayanti and a holiday, the number of workers in the plant was low.
Buildings surrounding the plant were also severely damaged by the force of the explosion.
A massive crater has formed at the site of the accident.
Some of the injured were moved to Satyavedu Hospital, while the critically injured were shifted to Chennai.
Regarding Vasu (32) from Tada, who was injured in the accident, the DMHO reported that he received first aid at the scene. After his condition was confirmed to be stable, he was shifted to Rela Hospital for advanced medical care.
He also mentioned that a female worker, Krishnaveni (38), sustained a leg injury and received emergency treatment at the site, noting that her condition is currently stable.
Two other workers, who were present at the scene of the accident, sustained no injuries and were confirmed to be safe following medical examinations.
DMHO Dr Balakrishna Naik said that a special medical team was sent to the accident site immediately to provide first aid to the injured. He mentioned that government hospitals in Sathyavedu and Sullurpeta, as well as nearby advanced medical centres, had been alerted.
Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Medical and Health, Sri Satyakumar Yadav, expressed deep shock over the incident and spoke over the phone with Dr Balakrishna Naik. He also directed officials to ensure that the injured receive advanced medical treatment.
The TIL Healthcare plant in Sri City, Tirupati, was established in 2009, with production underway since 2012. The facility was expanded in phases and currently includes an R&D division. The parent company, which claims to have a 35-year legacy, exports medicines and nutraceuticals to 54 countries.
Situated near Chennai, the Sri City plant exports pharmaceutical and healthcare products to several countries.
