Four workers have died in a massive explosion that occurred at the TIL Healthcare pharmaceutical company located in Sri City, Tirupati district.

The workers died after a boiler at the company exploded. Several people were critically injured in the incident, which occurred early Saturday morning. Officials fear the death toll could rise.

Workers have been trapped under the debris after the building collapsed due to the impact of the explosion.

Workers from nearby industries at Sri City have joined the relief and rescue efforts. Given the strict security arrangements, restrictions are in place regarding the entry of outsiders.

The accident took place during a shift change in the early hours of Saturday. Because Friday was Gandhi Jayanti and a holiday, the number of workers in the plant was low.

Buildings surrounding the plant were also severely damaged by the force of the explosion.

A massive crater has been formed at the site of the accident.

Some of the injured were moved to Satyavedu Hospital, while the critically injured were shifted to Chennai. Two of the deceased are said to be workers from Tamil Nadu. Residents mentioned that a majority of the workforce employed at the plant consists of Tamil workers.

The TIL Healthcare plant in Sri City, Tirupati was established in 2009, with production underway since 2012. The facility was expanded in phases and currently includes an R&D division. The parent company, which claims to have a 35-year legacy, exports medicines and nutraceuticals to 54 countries.

Benefiting from its proximity to Chennai, the Sri City plant exports pharmaceutical and healthcare products to several countries worldwide.

The District Collector and senior officials inspected the accident site.

The story will be updated as more details come in.
