In what is being seen as a significant political development in Andhra Pradesh, Jana Sena chief and matinee idol Pawan Kalyan has made it clear that he would not have a truck with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) or the YSRCP in the next Andhra Pradesh Assembly election in 2024.

The Jana Sena chief made the announcement after attending Jana Vaani, organised by his party, in Tirupati on Sunday, 21 August.

He said: “There should be a third alternative in Andhra Pradesh as well. We are not ready to support either the TDP or the YSRCP. Our intention is to ensure that the YSRCP does not return to power in the state.”

Though Pawan Kalyan initially advocated that all anti-YSRCP outfits should join hands to defeat it, over time he got close neither to the BJP nor the TDP.

His detractors, however, have always accused him of being TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s “adopted son”, and claimed they were covert allies.

According to analysts, Kalyan’s latest demarche to keep away from the TDP could have been a fallout of actor Jr NTR meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Hyderabad on Sunday.

The meeting seemed to have put off Pawan Kalyan, as the BJP is trying to build bridges of understanding with Jr NTR.

In a related but equally significant development, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Moha Reddy will visit Delhi to get clarity on a possible TDP-BJP alliance in Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the BJP also took aim at the YSRCP government in the state, with Union minister Anurag Thakur saying in Vijayawada on Sunday that people in Andhra Pradesh were looking for change, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would bring that change once the BJP was elected to power in the state.
