Purandeswari BJP meeting

Newly appointed Andhra Pradesh BJP chief Daggubati Purandeswari held her first meeting with the state- and district-level leaders of the party on Sunday, 16 July, in what was seen as the saffron party’s latest push before the upcoming Assembly and Parliamentary elections in early 2024.

The BJP is apparently expecting Purandeswari — the daughter of the late TDP founder NT Rama Rao — to play a bigger role after the polls.

This, even as the party’s Andhra Pradesh vice-president S Vishnuvardhan Reddy confirmed a BJP alliance with the Jana Sena of actor-politician Pawan Kalyan in the state.

Plan for the Assembly segments

Ahead of her tour in four zones of the state, she asked BJP leaders in every district to identify at least 150 workers from each Assembly segment to take up programmes.

According to her instruction, an action plan would be developed in all 175 Assembly segments of the state, where the selected workers would launch a campaign to highlight the failures and shortcomings of the incumbent YSRCP government.

Adding that the polls were not too far away and pointing out that anti-incumbency against the YS Jagan government was at its peak, Purandeswari asked the party cadre to pull up their socks.

She observed that the time was ripe to strengthen the party at the grassroot level and asked the leaders to work in coordination.

‘In neck-deep corruption’

“The YSRCP government is a failure. There is a lot of anti-incumbency against the government as it did nothing for the people. Right from sand quarrying to housing for the poor, the government is in neck-deep corruption. Instead of inviting investors to the state, which will generate jobs, YSRCP leaders are driving away investments,” Purandeswari told party leaders on Sunday.

“Be it Jockey apparel or the Lulu Group, everyone decided to leave Andhra Pradesh. The Lulu Group was supposed to invest ₹3,000 crore in the state, but it went to Tamil Nadu following the misdeeds of the YSRCP,” she noted.

“There are many similar incidents in the last four years. All the party leaders in the state should go and plan programmes starting from the mandal level,” added the BJP leader.

She asked the leaders to make the people of Andhra Pradesh aware of the good initiatives taken up for the state by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government in the last nine years.

She also asked them to spread word about the shortcomings of the present YSRCP government.

Plan for the four zones

Andhra Pradesh BJP vice-president S Vishnuvardhan Reddy, after the daylong meeting, told reporters that Purandeswari would be touring all four zones in the state — Rayalseema, North Andhra, Coastal Andhra, and the Godavari region — starting 23 July.

During the tour, Purandeswari is expected to take part in meetings and interactions with important leaders from the Assembly segments in each zone.

She is also expected to discuss the action plan that needed to be adopted throughout the state regarding the outreach campaign to explain to the people the achievements of the Union government and also the failures of the YSRCP government.

She will begin the tour with a meeting in Proddutur for the Rayalaseema zone on 23 July, before moving to Guntur on 25 July for Coastal Andhra, Rajahmundry on 26 July in the Godavari region, and finally Visakhapatnam in the north Andhra region on 27 July.

He also said the invite given to Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan to attend the NDA meeting scheduled on 18 July in Delhi was a testimony of the BJP and the Jana Sena alliance in Andhra Pradesh.

Union minister and state party affairs in-charge V Muraleedharan, former chief minister and BJP national executive member N Kiran Kumar Reddy and other leaders participated in the daylong meeting.
