AP signs MoU to introduce IB syllabus in government schools to enhance quality of education

In a significant leap forward in the field of education, the Andhra Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, has entered into a landmark partnership with the International Baccalaureate (IB) organisation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 21 September in a video conference programme held at the Chief Minister’s Office in the Secretariat, solidifying the state’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in government schools.

With this partnership, the renowned IB syllabus will now be available to government school students, opening doors to an internationally-recognised curriculum that nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and global citizenship.

The chief minister has already ordered the preparation of a comprehensive guideline plan for the smooth integration of the IB syllabus into the state’s educational framework.

The state Cabinet approved this historic decision to introduce the IB syllabus, emphasising its significance for the future of Andhra Pradesh’s education.

The MoU programme witnessed the participation of IB representatives from various international locations, including Singapore, Washington DC, Geneva, and the UK.

The event featured the virtual presence of IB Director General Olli-Pekka Heinonen and Matt Costello, Chief Business Development Officer at IB, who spoke about the importance of this collaboration.

Global recognition

Speaking on the occasion, Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the primary goal was to enhance the quality of education in Andhra Pradesh’s government schools, ensuring that students receive world-class learning experiences.

He highlighted the importance of the IB syllabus’s global recognition, emphasising that the certificates earned by students should hold value anywhere in the world.

While acknowledging the challenges of introducing the International Baccalaureate (IB) syllabus, the chief minister expressed his unwavering commitment to providing the best education possible for all students.

He stated that this initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen school education, which includes renovating schools, digitisation, bilingual textbooks, incentives for attendance, TOEFL exam training, and English-medium education in all schools.

The chief minister stressed that this transformation in education will take time, with visible results expected over the course of a decade. The ultimate goal is to bring radical changes in the lives of the underprivileged, empowering them with the best possible education.

He expressed gratitude to the International Baccalaureate organisation for their partnership in achieving this significant milestone.
