In 2010-2011, the Reliance (Anil Ambani) Power Project was set up in Samarlakota in Andhra Pradesh. This project was expected to be a 2,400 MW gas-based thermal power plant and intended to be India’s largest ‘clean green power project’.
The project was stalled due to financial difficulties. In 2018, a unit of the Reliance Power project was shifted to Bangladesh.
In December 2024, Reliance Power’s subsidiary Samarlakota Power Limited settled its debts. It settled a $15.48 million loan default with the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
Recently, Anil Ambani’s Reliance Enterprises partnered with Druk Holdings to develop a 500-megawatt solar power plant in Gelefu Mindfulness City in Bhutan.
The project will be implemented in two phases with a capacity of 250 MW power over the next two years.
With Anil Ambani investing in the solar panels industry in the Anakapalle district, it is said that efforts are being made to raise funds. Industry sources believe that an international company has also come forward as an investor.
