Synopsis: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is expected to soon launch a programme to distribute ‘NTR Baby Kits’ to newborns delivered at government hospitals. The kits will contain basic newborn-care and hygiene items for use during the first days after birth and after families return home from hospital. The Health Department has allocated ₹51.15 crore annually for the programme, which is expected to cover about 2.45 lakh newborns each year.
The Andhra Pradesh government will soon begin distributing ‘NTR Baby Kits’ to newborns delivered at government hospitals across the State, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav said on Thursday, 8 October. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is expected to formally launch the programme.
The Health Department has allocated ₹51.15 crore a year for the programme, which is expected to cover about 2.45 lakh newborns annually. Each kit will cost ₹1,400.22.
The kits are intended to provide basic newborn-care and hygiene products during the first days after birth and after families return home from hospital. They are also meant to reduce some of the expenses families incur on essential newborn-care items after childbirth.
Named after NT Rama Rao—the matinee idol, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and founder of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)—each kit will contain a baby bed with a mosquito net, a baby macintosh, baby clothes, a baby towel and three washable, reusable nappies.
It will also include 200 grams of baby powder, 100 ml of baby shampoo, 200 ml of baby oil, baby soap, a soap box, a rattle toy and a kit bag.
Yadav inspected different types of NTR Baby Kit bags at the Health Department headquarters in Mangalagiri on Thursday. He directed officials to ensure that only quality products that contribute to the health, hygiene and safety of newborns are included in the kits.
The Minister said providing essential newborn-care products in a single kit would help reduce the financial burden on families after childbirth.
