A 46-year-old school teacher with two daughters was arrested for marrying his 14-year-old girl student in Andhra Pradesh’s West Godavari district.

Identifying the Hindi teacher as K Somaraju of Yandagani Zilla Parishad High School, the police said he lured the girl under the guise of love and forcibly kept her with him after “marrying” her on 19 November.

The girl managed to escape from his custody on 22 November and reported the matter to her family. Somaraju reportedly confessed to the crime at a village panchayat meeting. He was then handed over to the police.

“Somaraju had been luring the minor girl for four months and even gave her his smartphone. He picked her up from her house and took her to his residence, where he tied a thread around her neck, saying it was their marriage. However, after two days of assault, she returned to the village,” West Godavari District Disha (women’s protection wing) DSP N Murali Krishna told South First.

“Somaraju’s wife had abandoned him seven years ago. He has been booked under IPC sections 376, 342, and 506. He has two daughters,” the DSP added.

The officer mentioned that the police have also invoked sections 5 and 6 of the POCSO Act and Section 9 of the Child Marriage Act against the teacher.

Somaraju, arrested on Thursday, would be produced before a court later, the police said.
