Synopsis: The Andhra Pradesh government has revived the Baby Kit scheme to support newborns and mothers in government hospitals. Approved by CM Chandrababu Naidu, the fully state-funded initiative will provide kits worth ₹1,410, containing 11 essential items. Previously supported by the NHM, the scheme aims to enhance infant health and hygiene, especially during the crucial postnatal period
The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the revival of the Baby Kit scheme, which provides essential items to newborns and was earlier discontinued by the previous administration. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu approved the Health Department’s proposal on 6 May, with the scheme now set to be fully funded by the state.
Originally implemented during the 2014–2019 term, the Baby Kit scheme had previously received partial support from the National Health Mission (NHM). However, with NHM and other central funding sources like PH-ABHIM, the PM Matru Vandana Yojana, and the 15th Finance Commission no longer applicable, the state has decided to bear the full cost.
Each Baby Kit, costing ₹1,410, will include 11 essential items aimed at promoting infant health and hygiene. These include a baby bed with mosquito net, waterproof cot sheet, baby dress, washable nappies, towel, baby powder, shampoo, oil, soap with box, and a baby rattle toy.
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, who submitted the proposal, emphasised the scheme’s importance, particularly as more than half of the state’s deliveries occur in government hospitals. “The Baby Kit not only helps safeguard newborns’ health but also supports families during the critical postnatal period,” he said.
