Andhra Pradesh politics now revolves around YSRCP, BJP, Jana Sena; TDP struggles for space

Ever since Purandeswari took the reins of BJP’s state unit, the BJP and the Jana Sena are trading barbs with the YSRCP, leaving out the TDP.

Chandrababu Naidu arrest

Over the past few days, the ruling YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh has intensified its attack on both the state’s BJP chief Daggubati Purandeswari and Jana Sena supremo Pawan Kalyan.

The renewed interest by the YSRCP in Purandeswari and Pawan Kalyan has led the TDP — the main Opposition — to jostle for some space in the political landscape of the state.

Interestingly, YSRCP leaders never targeted any BJP leader like they are directing their barbs at Purandeswari ever since she took the reins of her party’s state unit.

Right from the day she assumed office, Purandeswari had been accusing the YSRCP of many failures, including the state’s fiscal position due to debt.

Even though the previous state president Somu Veerraju used to attack the YSRCP government, the hitbacks from the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led party were rare.

Criticism by YSRCP

The YSRCP’s social media handles and its leaders — including Rajya Sabha member V Vijaysai Reddy and the state’s Industries Minister Gudivada Amarnath — openly criticised Purandeswari, urging her to check her facts first.

It all started with Vijaysai Reddy, who said in a tweet: “Letting the new AP BJP chief Smt. @PurandeswariBJP know that the AP govt. is not interested in taking credit for central schemes. Please grant Special Category Status to AP, Railway Zone, dropping Disinvestment of Vizag Steel, complete the Polavaram Project, chennai-Vizag Corridor, and increase support to farmers. [sic]”

Though the YSRCP was flagging the issues like special-category status, disinvestment of the Vizag Steel Plant, and the delay in setting up the South Coastal Railway Zone, the party leaders never openly criticised the BJP leaders attributing the issues as their failures and injustice to Andhra Pradesh.

‘No awareness of the financial situation’

Vijayasai Reddy’s comments were followed by Gudivada Amarnath.

The industries minister went on to say that Purandeswari didn’t have a basic awareness of the financial condition of Andhra Pradesh.

He also questioned the rationale behind Purandeswari not questioning the borrowings made by N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government, which was in power before 2019.

He asked why Purandeswari didn’t raise her voice or question the alleged financial irregularities that took place during the Naidu regime.

Pawan Kalyan’s remarks against ward and village volunteers during the second leg of his Varahi Yatra in the Godavari region also led to an intense war of words between Pawan Kalyan and the YSRCP leaders.

Ministers RK Roja, Gudivada Amarnath, and Ambati Rambabu have been on the front line to attack Pawan Kalyan.

YSRCP chief and Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy himself lambasted Pawan Kalyan at a recent public meeting held recently.

“Unfortunately, the TDP — having almost 40 percent of the vote share in the state — has been jostling for some space while the Jana Sena has been hogging all the limelight just 6 percent of the vote share,” pointed out a political analyst who closely watches the trends in Andhra Pradesh politics.

“Street-corner meetings of the general public to dining table discussions, all are centred around Jagan and Pawan Kalyan. Any discussions about the TDP or its activities are hardly seen. No buzz either around the TDP scion and former minister Nara Lokesh’s Yuva Galam padayatra,” he added.

On its part, the TDP leaders have been holding tours called “Chaitanya Yatras” in several parts of the state to propagate its election manifesto announced by Naidu, during Mahanadu in May.
