Andhra Pradesh on high alert: Severe low-pressure in Bay of Bengal to intensify into cyclone

The disaster management authority further alerted that the cyclone is likely to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast in a northwest direction in the next 48 hours.

Synopsis: Advising the people to take appropriate measures, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), on Saturday, 25 October, noted, “It is stated that it will intensify into a severe cyclone by Sunday, 26 October, and is likely to turn into a storm in the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday, 27 October morning.”

The Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are on high alert as the severe low-pressure system in the southeast Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a cyclone.

According to the IMD it is currently centred approximately 420 km from Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 990 km from Visakhapatnam, 990 km from Chennai, and 1,000 km from Kakinada.

Advising the people to take appropriate measures, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), on Saturday, 25 October, noted, “It is stated that it will intensify into a severe cyclone by Sunday, 26 October, and is likely to turn into a storm in the southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday, 27 October morning.”

The disaster management authority further alerted that the cyclone is likely to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast in a northwest direction in the next 48 hours.

Weather forecast

On Saturday, Prakhar Jain, MD, Disaster Management Authority, in a press release, urging the people to be alert stated that, “Due to this system, moderate to heavy rains are expected to occur at isolated places in Konaseema, Krishna, and Bapatla districts on Saturday. Moderate to heavy rains are also likely at isolated places in Prakasam, Nellore, and Tirupati districts, while light to moderate rains may occur at isolated places in other districts.”

Further according to IMD forecast for coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next five days:

  • October 25: Heavy rain is expected in several areas, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds.
  • October 26: Very heavy rainfall is likely, along with thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds.
  • October 27: Extremely heavy rain is forecast in many regions, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, squalls, and strong surface winds.
  • October 28:  Extremely heavy rainfall is expected to continue, with thunderstorms, lightning, squally conditions, and strong surface winds.
  • October 29: Heavy rain is likely in isolated areas, though intensity may gradually decrease compared to previous days.

Home Minister holds review meeting

On Friday, 24 October, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha Vangalapudi held a review with the officials of the Disaster Management Department.

The minister ordered to take precautionary measures in the affected districts and keep NDRF and SDRF forces ready. People have also been asked not to come out for three days unless it is an emergency.

She further urged the effected people to contact the toll free numbers 112, 1070, 18004250101 for emergency relief measures.
