In a horrific incident, a 48-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death on the night of Saturday, 25 June, on a flyover in Vijayawada by her son-in-law for instigating his wife — her daughter — to divorce him.

The accused was identified as Kumba Rajesh (37), who sold clothes door to door to eke out a living, the police said.

What happened?

As per the police, Rajesh killed his mother-in-law Nagamani Gogula as he held a grudge over.

The deceased was a resident of the JNNURM Colony in the Jakkampudi area of Vijayawada, and had two daughters.

Her second daughter Lalitha — his wife — was having constant quarrels with Rajesh as several differences cropped up between them, the police said.

“He thought that his in-laws were encouraging his wife Laitha to file a divorce petition, and her mother-in-law was the reason for their separation,” an officer from the Town Two Police Station told South First.

The cops added that a divorce petition, filed by Lalitha, is pending before a local court.

“His wife was frequently going to her mother’s place. So he thought if he killed her, she would automatically return to him,” added.

Modus operandi

As per the preliminary investigation, the cops said that Rajesh called his in-laws to the Chanumolu Venkata Rao flyover.

When the in-laws arrived around 9 pm, Rajesh first attacked his father-in-law, but he escaped on his two-wheeler, said the police.

He then reportedly turned his attention to his mother-in-law. “Rajesh stabbed her repeatedly with a sickle used to cut coconuts,” the police officer said.

The cops added that Nagamani sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.

The Two Town Kothapet police reached the spot after receiving information about the crime, and moved the body to a hospital.

The accused and his wife have two children — a daughter and a son.
