The Andhra Pradesh government increased the stipend for junior doctors on Friday, 21 October.

The government issued the order after the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association(APJUDA) issued a strike notice, demanding 42% in their stipend.

“The Director of Medical Educational furnished a proposal for enhancement of stipends to the Internees (House Surgeons), Post Graduates (Degree and Diploma), Super specialty and MDS courses of Government Medical Colleges including Dental Colleges. The Government after careful examination hereby revises the stipend with effect from 1 January 2022,” the government order said.

“We are at least looking for 25 percent in stipend, which has not been fulfilled,” Dr J Jeshwanth, president of APJUDA, told South First.

The increase announced was around 15 percent.

“We have not called off the strike. We will take a call on it later,” he added.

The junior doctors have called for a boycott of out-patient department duties on 26 October. They would stay away from all elective duties the next day.

APJUDA has over 8,500 members across the state.

APJUDA, in its statement, said the average stipend of house surgeons was ₹ 30,000 across the country. Broad specialty post-graduates get between ₹65,000 and ₹70,000, while super specialty post-graduates receive between ₹.80,000 and ₹90,000.

“We may have to boycott emergency duties too as a last resort if our demands are not met,” APJUDA added.
