Synopsis: BJP MP CM Ramesh has alleged that BRS leader KT Rama Rao offered to join the BJP or forge an alliance in exchange for help securing the release of Kavitha in the Delhi liquor scam. His claims came a day after KTR accused Ramesh and Telangana CM Revanth Reddy of corruption involving land deals and contracts
BJP MP from Andhra Pradesh, CM Ramesh, on Saturday, 26 July, accused Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao of offering to his party in BRS or striking an alliance with it about four to five months ago in exchange for help in securing the release of BRS MLC K Kavitha, who was in prison in Delhi in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scam.
Ramesh’s allegations came in response to KTR’s claims on Friday, 25 July, that Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had awarded a ₹1,600 crore road contract in the proposed Future City to a company linked to him.
KTR also alleged that Ramesh was involved in helping Revanth Reddy in securing a ₹10,000 crore bank loan against 400 acres of Kancha Gachibowli forest land. KTR made these accusations during a student convention in Hyderabad. He further accused Revanth Reddy of striking a deal between the Congress and BJP, questioning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence on the issue.
Incensed by KTR’s allegations, Ramesh denied outright receiving any contracts in Future City and countered him with serious accusations. Speaking to the media, Ramesh claimed, “Isn’t it true that you (KTR) visited my house in Delhi, which was recorded on CCTV?”
Ramesh said KTR had requested his intervention for halting inquiry against Kavitha and secure her release in exchange for merging the BRS with the BJP or striking an alliance with it.” Ramesh, who is BJP Lok Sabah member from Anakapalli, categorically denied any involvement in Future City contracts and promised to release evidence of KTR’s visit to his residence, to the media soon.
Addressing the contract allegations, Ramesh questioned whether a chief minister can award a ₹1,660 crore contract on a nomination basis, stating, “Doesn’t KTR, who was in power for 10 years, know the rules? Contracts above ₹50 lakh require a tender process.” He clarified that the Future City road contract, valued at ₹1,660 crore, was split into two packages and was awarded through competitive bidding.
Companies like Ritwik, Megha, L&T, and Rahvaa participated, with Ritwik securing one package about three months ago. Ramesh emphasized, “I am neither a director nor part of Ritwik’s management.”
Ramesh also pointed out that during the BRS’ tenure, contracts worth ₹4-5 lakh crore were awarded, including ₹1 lakh crore for the Kaleshwaram project. He questioned whether those works were awarded on a nomination basis ₹2,000 crore contract in Thupakula Gudem under the BRS government. “How did Ritwik get that project if the BRS was against Andhra contractors?” Ramesh asked.
Recalling his interaction with KTR, Ramesh claimed that the BRS leader had sought his help four to five months ago regarding Kavitha’s case. He alleged KTR offered a BRS-BJP merger or alliance to resolve Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI cases against her. Ramesh said he raised the proposal with BJP leadership, who rejected it, stating, “The BRS is steeped in corruption. There is no question of aligning with it.” He added that the BRS had lost all seats in the recent Lok Sabha elections, signalling its political decline.
Ramesh also reminded KTR of his support during KTR’s election as MLA from Sircilla, where he won by a narrow 300-vote margin with Ramesh’s help, when the TDP and BRS were allies. He criticised KTR for poor political decisions, such as losing senior leaders like Thummala Nageswara Rao, and for allegedly abusing the Kamma community. Ramesh claimed KTR had said they had trusted Reddys but was betrayed when they aligned with Revanth Reddy, leaving Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh as their only friend.
Addressing KTR’s claim of a Congress-BJP nexus, Ramesh argued that the public would not take such allegations seriously as the two parties are “sworn enemies.” He said KTR’s accusations originated from fear that the BJP might ally with the TDP in Telangana in future and in which case it would mean the eventual death of the BRS. Ramesh challenged KTR to a public debate at the Press Club or any venue of KTR’s choice and that he was ready to prove that KTR’s allegations are baseless.
