Synopsis: The Union government approved ₹1554.99 crore in additional assistance for five states affected by floods, landslides, and cyclones in 2024. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will receive ₹608.08 crore and ₹231.75 crore, respectively. This funding is in addition to existing SDRF funds.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are set to receive additional assistance of ₹608.08 crore and ₹231.75 crore, respectively, from the Union government, under the Natural Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF).
The relief was announced on Wednesday, 19 February, following a High-Level Committee (HLC) under Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
In total an amount of ₹1554.99 crore was announced for five states affected by floods, landslides, and cyclonic storms in 2024. Apart from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Nagaland is to receive ₹170.99 crore, Odisha is to receive ₹255.24 crore, and Tripura is set to receive ₹288.93 crore.
The press release noted that the announcement showed the resolve of the Narendra Modi government to help the people of five states who faced these natural disasters.
According to the government’s press release, the HLC approved central assistance of ₹1554.99 crore to five States from NDRF, subject to an adjustment of 50 percent of the opening balance for the year available in the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF).
The release further noted that the approved amount is in addition to the funds already released through the SDRF, which is available to the states for disaster management.
Speaking of the funds released in the financial year 2024-25, the release noted, “Union Government has already released a total of ₹18,322.80 crore to 27 states from SDRF and ₹4,808.30 crore from NDRF to 18 states. Additional funds have also been allocated from other disaster-related funds, including ₹2208.55 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) to 14 states, and ₹719.72 crore from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) to 8 states.”
They further claimed that the Union government also swiftly responded to the affected regions by sending Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to assess the situation and provide immediate relief, even before receiving formal requests.
