After UAPA charges, Andhra Pradesh court sends YouTuber Prashna Raavan to 14 days’ judicial remand
The FIR, registered at Gannavaram Police Station in the Krishna district, invoked Sections 147, 148, 152, 192, 197(1)(d), and 353(1)(b) of the BNS, along with Sections 13 and 39 of the UAPA.
Synopsis: The Gannavaram Junior Civil Court sent political commentator and YouTuber Prashna Raavan to judicial remand following his arrest in a case under the UAPA. The charges encompass offences including criminal conspiracy, threats to public order, acts threatening the sovereignty and integrity of India, support for unlawful activities, and support for a terrorist organisation.
The Andhra Pradesh police on Sunday, 5 July, finally seem to have achieved what they wanted — sending political commentator and YouTuber B Joseph alias Prashna Raavan to jail.
After being produced before the Gannavaram Additional Junior Civil Court, Raavan’s lawyer failed to secure bail for him in the fifth case slapped against him under draconian sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Following the police’s demand, the judge remanded Raavan to 14 days of judicial custody.
After the YouTuber secured bail in four cases registered against him at different police stations across the state, he was arrested for the fifth time by the Gannavaram police on Saturday night.
The FIR, registered at Gannavaram Police Station in the Krishna district, invoked Sections 147, 148, 152, 192, 197(1)(d), and 353(1)(b) of the BNS, along with Sections 13 and 39 of the UAPA.
The charges encompass offences including criminal conspiracy, threats to public order, acts threatening the sovereignty and integrity of India, support for unlawful activities, and support for a terrorist organisation.
The most serious charge is under Section 147 of the BNS, which criminalises waging war against the Government of India, attempting to wage war, or abetting the waging of war. The offence is punishable with death or imprisonment for life, in addition to a fine.
Critics alleged that the police invoked UAPA after they came under sharp criticism from the pro-government ecosystem for failing to secure the judicial remand of Raavan. The first four cases were booked for targeting Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and his family, but the magistrates did not find enough grounds to send Raavan to prison.
This time, however, the magistrate at the Gannavaram Additional Junior Civil Court accepted the prosecution’s demand for judicial remand. Raavan was later sent to Nellore jail for a fortnight.
Reflecting the seriousness attached by the government to this case, as many as 20 lawyers turned up on behalf of the prosecution while a lone lawyer represented Raavan.
Jada Shravan Kumar, representing Raavan, alleged political vendetta and said, “We are very sure that the contents of the FIR do not support the factual aspects.”
