16-year-old girl dies after being set on fire by boyfriend

A 16-year-old girl has tragically succumbed to injuries after being set on fire by a 22-year-old man on Saturday, 19 October in Badvel town, Kadapa district. The incident has ignited widespread outrage and prompted immediate action from authorities.

The accused, identified as Vignesh, 22, allegedly lured the girl to a secluded location under the pretense of wanting to talk. Trusting him, she traveled to the outskirts of Badvel, approximately two kilometers from the main road, where he took her to a nearby forested area.

According to police reports, Vignesh doused the girl in petrol and set her ablaze before fleeing the scene. Passersby who witnessed the incident alerted the police, who rushed her to the Government General Hospital.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the girl succumbed to her severe burn injuries on Sunday.Vignesh has been arrested and is currently in police custody. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Reactions from State leaders

The horrific attack has drawn strong condemnation from state officials. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow and called for an expedited investigation to ensure swift justice for the victim.

“The investigation must be completed swiftly, and the accused should be presented before a fast-track court to avoid any delay in delivering justice,” Naidu stated, emphasising the need for severe punishment to deter such heinous acts in the future.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha also expressed her shock and grief over the girl’s death. She stated that the scenes following the incident were heart-wrenching and pledged all necessary support to the victim’s family. The Home Minister assured that steps were being taken to ensure that the accused receives the harshest punishment under the law.
