LS polls seizures: Over ₹202 crore seized in Telangana; ₹1,309 crore in Tamil Nadu

Telangana goes to the polls for its 17 Lok Sabha seats on 13 May, while Tamil Nadu finished polling on 19 April.

Law enforcement agencies have seized cash, gold, liquor and articles intended to be given as freebies to influence voters, worth over ₹202.52 crore so far, as part of implementing the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, elections officials said on Monday, 29 April.

The cumulative seized articles include ₹76.65 crore in cash, gold, silver, and other valuables worth over ₹29.62 crore, liquor worth over ₹43.57 crore, drugs/narcotics valued at ₹26.12 crore and other items/freebies worth ₹26.54 crore, according to a statement issued by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer.

The state goes to the polls for its 17 Lok Sabha seats on 13 May.

Meanwhile, the ECI and the Income Tax department officials made seizures worth ₹1,309.52 crore in Tamil Nadu since the Model Code of Conduct came into force on 16 March for the 19 April general elections, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo said on Monday.

Of the total sum, cash amounting to ₹179.91 crore and precious metals valued at ₹1,083.78 crore were confiscated.

In addition, liquor worth ₹8.65 crore, narcotics of market value ₹1.36 crore and freebies (voter inducements) worth ₹35.8 crore were also seized, Sahoo said in a release in Chennai.
