Kallakurichi spurious liquor deaths: Tamil Nadu CM Stalin announces ₹10 lakh ex gratia

The chief minister said four persons linked to the sale of poisonous arrack have been arrested so far and announced ₹10 lakh assistance to each of the families of 34 people who died after consuming illicit arrack.

Also, he announced ₹50,000 assistance to those who are being treated in hospitals. Also, the CM said the state Home Secretary and Director General of Police will submit a report on the hooch tragedy following inspection.

Post the assembly session, Stalin held an inquiry meeting to look into the deaths of Kallakurichi.

He issued various orders to the officials of the revenue department, police department, and medical department, to ensure continuous monitoring and treatment, especially for those who are being treated in hospitals.

One-man commission 

Stalin also directed officials to notify a one-man commission to be led by retired Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas to make recommendations to the government on measures to be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and also look into the reasons for the Kallakurichi deaths.

Expressing shock over the deaths in the illicit liquor consumption case, the Speaker said the state government was taking steps to contain the sale of spurious liquor and following the incident, Chief Minister MK Stalin initiated steps to provide medical treatment to the affected.

Appavu, who read out the condolence resolution, expressed shock and anguish over the death of innocent lives in the Kuwait blaze, especially seven from Tamil Nadu, and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

The House paid tributes to former lawmakers including N Pugazhendhi, who had represented the Vikravandi assembly constituency, and C Velayuthan, among others, who had passed away.

The House was later adjourned for the day.

Discussions on the demand for grants for various government departments will commence on Friday and the session will conclude on 29 June ahead of the Vikravandi by-poll.
