FSSAI directed food businesses, including e-commerce platforms, to remove “misleading” claims of ‘A1’ and ‘A2’ milk and milk products from packaging.

Health

FSSAI said the claims about milk do not comply with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Health

Milk and milk products are marketed as either ‘A1’ or ‘A2’ types. It is claimed that A2 milk is better for digestive health, particularly for individuals not comfortable with traditional milk.

Health

FSSAI explained that differentiation between A1 and A2 milk is related to the structure of the beta-casein protein in milk. FSSAI regulations do not recognise this distinction.

Health

A1 and A2 refer to two genetic variants of the beta-casein protein found in cow’s milk.

Health

The distinction lies primarily in their amino acid structure, which affects how they are digested and their potential health implications.

Health

Proponents of A2 milk argue that it is easier to digest and may be a better option for individuals who experience discomfort with regular milk.

Health

However, comprehensive scientific consensus is lacking, and more research is needed to firmly establish these claims
