A Vedic seer, cursed to become a rakshasa due to his negligence while chanting Vedic texts, is told the cure is to get a part of the punyam of Nampaduvan.

Born in a community that was supposedly lower in the societal strata, Nampaduvan, a musical devotee, exhibited unmatched devotion.

When the rakshasa finally met Nampaduvan on the promised Kaisika Ekadasi night, he threatened to kill him.

Telangana

Nampaduvan requested that he be allowed to finish his fast and promised to come back and offer himself to the brahma rakshasa.

Telangana

Nampaduvan hurries back to the rakshasa, who demanded the punyam from the offerings that the former made.

The devotee initially rejected the suggestion but was moved when the demon narrated his story from his previous birth.

Dr Anita Ratnam and Dr Prof Ramanujam revived the play in 1999 and the event has grown annually ever since.
