SR Hiremath, founder of Samaj Parivartana Samudaya (SPS) was chosen for the prestigious Badshah Khan Memorial Award, 2022.

Karnataka

ITM University Gwalior instituted this award in memory of freedom fighter Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan.

The award recognises Hiremath’s lifetime battle, inspired by Gandhi and  Dr BR Ambedkar and JP, against illegal mining in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Karnataka

He strongly believes in  self-rule (empowered gram sabhas) and re-establishing community control and management of natural resources.

Karnataka

Hiremath’s fight against illegal mining resulted in the apex court directing the Karnataka government to ban mining.

Karnataka

“The country is facing the worst-ever crisis in the last eight years as fundamental rights are facing a serious threat.”

Karnataka

“The RSS is now taking the country back to pre-Independence days through its dangerous anti-democratic and communalist ideology.”

Karnataka

Hiremath is launching a padayatra demanding the repeal of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee Act, and Land Acquisition Act.

Karnataka

It appears that his battle is not yet over since the mining mafia will try to come back again, using new loopholes in the law.
