After its resounding success at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) announced on 27 May that tickets are now available for Manthan, in cinemas.
A refurbished edition of the 1976 film, which was initially funded by 500,000 farmers from Gujarat 48 years ago, premiered at the Cannes Classics segment of the festival on 17 May 2024.
The remastered version of Manthan is set to hit theatres again on June 1 and 2, screening across 38 cities in India, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Kochi, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, and so on.
The restoration process utilised the 35mm original camera negative stored at the NFDC-National Film Archive of India, with sound digitally extracted from the 35mm release print.
The film is a fictionalised account of the remarkable dairy cooperative movement, inspired by Dr Verghese Kurien, which propelled India to becoming the world's largest milk producer.
Also featuring Girish Karnad, Dr Mohan Agashe, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Anant Nag and Abha Dhulia, Manthan, is co-written by Shyam Benegal and celebrated playwright Vijay Tendulkar.
