Shankar Patil Munenakoppa, the minister in charge Raichur, held a detailed discussion on steps to prevent the spread of the virus.

Health

The Karnataka health department should take initiatives to control the breeding mosquitoes and create awareness, the minister said.

Health

The Zika virus, closely related to dengue, is transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes in humans.

Health

Clinical illness is usually mild. So far there have been no reports of severe disease, hospitalisation or deaths.

Health

Those who were recently in an area with active Zika transmission, or have had unprotected sex with someone confirmed to have it, should test for the virus.

Health

Pregnant women should take care as the virus can pass to the foetus with severe impact on the foetus’s brain, eyes and growth.

Health

There is no vaccine available for Zika virus. The virus can be treated with common pain and fever medicines, rest and plenty of water.

Health

Primary prevention is to reduce exposure to mosquitoes through measures including using insect repellents and physical barriers.

Health

If symptoms worsen, seek medical advice.
