Ligament tear turns deadly: Teenager dies due to alleged medical negligence

The 17-year-old BSc student and football player died at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai on 15 November.

Priya R visited the Periyar Nagar Government Peripheral Hospital on 26 October to treat a ligament tear in her right knee.

Her parents allege that Priya’s complaints of consistent and severe knee pain after the surgery were ignored by the hospital staff.

She was shifted to RGGGH where tests revealed that the tissues in her right leg had been damaged beyond repair.

A health department inquiry found medical negligence on the part of Chief Medical Officer Dr K Somasundar and Assistant Professor Dr Paul Ram Shankar of the Peripheral Hospital.

They have been suspended and there is an ongoing police investigation.
