A life-saving kidney swap was successfully conducted by a team of eight doctors at the Institute of Nephrourology on 5 January.

Health

This is the first such swap transplant to have happened in a government setup in Karnataka.

Health

A swap transplant involves an exchange of organs between families as the donor cannot give the organ to their relative because of blood-group mismatch.

Health

Performing this at a government setup would ensure they get their follow-up treatments almost free of cost.

In this case, 13-year-old boy and a 38-year-old man, both with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), were on dialysis.

Health

Their mother and wife, respectively, were ready to be their donors but the blood groups were not compatible.

Health

When doctors found these two compatible kidneys, they went through the legal process. After they received the approvals, they went ahead with the surgery.

Health

While the families refused to speak to South First, the doctors said it was better not to reveal their identities.

Health

They added that the patients would be provided immunosuppressant medications and follow-up care after the surgery at the hospital for their lifetime.
