As diabetes continues to affect millions globally, the possibility of reversing the condition and the newer challenges has became a topic of significant interest.

Dr V Mohan, one of India’s leading diabetologists, speaks about challenges in managing and potentially reversing diabetes.

"101 million people in India have diabetes, and an additional 136 million have pre-diabetes, totalling 237 million affected individuals. "

I have an A, B, C, D, E, F mantra for diabetes reversal: A stands for A1C: If your A1C is not very high, reversal is possible. Normal A1C is 5.6. For diabetics, up to 7 is considered manageable. If it’s 8, reversal is still possible.

Health

B stands for body weight: If you are overweight or obese, losing weight increases the likelihood of remission. If your BMI is higher, weight loss can significantly help reverse diabetes.

Health

C stands for C-peptide: This indicates the amount of insulin your body secretes. If your C-peptide levels are good, meaning your body still produces insulin, the chances of reversal are higher.

Health

D stands for duration of diabetes: If the duration of diabetes is short—say, 2, 3, or 5 years—the chances of reversal are much higher.

Health

E stands for enthusiastic individual: A person needs to be highly motivated and enthusiastic to follow the required diet and lifestyle changes, not just for a few months but for life.

Health

F stands for follow-up: Regular follow-ups are crucial.
