Glacier collapse triggers flash flood in Tibet

At around 8 a.m. on August 26, a portion of a glacier at an elevation of about 17,000 feet (5,200 metres) collapsed. The ice and rock plunged nearly 4,000 feet (1,200 metres), generating enormous ground shaking.

Ice, rock and water rush downstream

The collapsing glacier sent huge quantities of ice, rock, sediment and water rushing down the mountain. Around 8:10 a.m., the falling material formed a powerful debris-flow-like surge. Within minutes, the surge reached the Lhende River.

The river gets blocked

At around 8:30 a.m., the surge reached the Lhende River, carrying massive amounts of ice, rocks and sediment. The debris blocked the river, creating a temporary natural dam. Water began accumulating behind the blockage.

Water pressure builds

As the river remained blocked, water continued to collect behind the debris. The water level rose rapidly, increasing pressure on the temporary dam. But the blockage could not withstand the growing force of the water.

The dam breaks

The temporary dam fails At around 9 a.m., the temporary dam gave way under the increasing pressure. The accumulated water was suddenly released downstream, creating a massive flood wave. The flood surged towards the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
