Cyclone Mandous likely to make landfall around midnight of 9 December

Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert and bracing for Cyclone Mandous.

The Indian Meteorological Department expects it to cross the coast by midnight of Friday with a maximum sustained windspeed of 65-75 kmph gusting up to 85 kmph.

“It will maintain its intensity of severe cyclonic storm till early morning of 9 December and then weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm tomorrow (9 December).”

It is the North East Monsoon’s first cyclone this year.

After Mandous makes landfall, the IMD forecast points to heavy to very heavy or even extremely heavy rain likely at isolated places on Friday.

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places across the region.

Heavy rains are predicted in parts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal and fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea till 10 December.

Puducherry Chief Minister  N Rangasamy said that “necessary instructions have been given to the concerned departments to deal with the impact.”

“Adequate precautions should be taken by reviewing the impact of the storm from time to time,” the Andhra Pradesh chief minister has apparently said.
